About
Our Roots: 1995–2003
Freedom FM first hit the Dublin airwaves at 7:00 PM on March 6th, 1995, founded by Andy Walker and Simon Davis, with Ralph McGarry soon joining to lead programming and promotion. Starting out as "Dublin’s Premier Chart Music Station," Freedom FM quickly became a cornerstone of raw local creativity, pioneering new sounds, specialist shows, and launching the careers of numerous media professionals. After moving to its iconic 92.0 FM frequency in early 1996, the station built a loyal Dublin following before signing off in March 2003.
The Return & Growth
What began as a popular 2020 lockdown reunion brought the original crew back together after 17 years. The station’s huge audience demand led to nationwide 30-day FM broadcast licenses awarded by the BAI/Coimisiún na Meán across multiple years. In April 2025, Freedom FM officially became a licensed regional broadcaster on the DAB+ digital radio platform ( FailteDAB ), expanding its roster of presenters from across the country while celebrating the best music, fun, and nostalgia of the '90s and 2000s.
Freedom FM Today
Now on-air for 6 years in its modern era, Freedom FM is proud to be part of the Emerald Media Group network, broadcasting alongside sister stations Gravity Hits, Lazer Hits, Velvet Sounds, and Ireland’s Love Radio.
